Phase III Sleeping Car and Diner / Lounge Cars

By the mid 1980's no major builder of passenger equipment was left in the US. Amtrak was desperate as their older 'Heritage Fleet' cars were rapidly approaching the end of their life span. The SuperLiner cars they had purchased in the 1970's were too high profile for the low clearances on railroads in the eastern US. Amtrak subsequently set up shops in Beech Grove, Indiana, to build newly designed cars that would fit in the tighter confines of the east coast routes. Most were used east of the Missisippi, but some made their way west. Two basic styles were made, a sleeping car and a diner-lounge. Con-Cor's models are based on Amtrak blueprints and are very faithful in their reproduction.
