This book is a review of the Green Lines, with maps of each line and photos of transit cars taken along each one. Most of the photos seem to have been taken during the 1930Õs. The introduction shows the under-street engineering required for the LinesÕ in-street electrical conduit. 64 pages, 109 b&w photos, maps, roster, drawings of cars. 10.75Ó x 8.25Ó, soft cover.

One defining difference between rail technology in Britain and North America was that railroad building in North America was contingent on a potential market rather than an existing one. An even greater factor was geography. Because North American railroads had to cover great distances and deal with hefty physical barriers, they developed powerful locomotives instead of building the costly engineering works customary in England. The North American system therefore became a mirror image of the British model which had low-power locomotives and a superb infrastructure. Read how the author proves these statements. 348 pages, approximately 40 illustrations, many maps. 8.5" x 11", hard cover.

Norfolk and Western Coal Cars by Andrew Dow —
Endlessly long trains of black hoppers carrying
multitude tons of “black diamonds” from mine to market
were a hallmark of the N&W. Dow has written a detailed
and interesting story of the development of the road’s
massive coal-hauling fleet. From the late 1880s
through more recent times, the progressive N&W
pioneered many features in its hoppers. Along with the
history come many company photos showing cars, trains,
and mine scenes. 240 pages, over 250 b&w photos,

New York Central and the Trains of the Fu-ture by
Geoffrey H Doughty — The author documents the decline
in railroad passenger traffic and the railroads’
attempts to win it back with a series of experimental
lightweight, fast, and stylish trains in the late
forties and fifties, with a special emphasis on the
New York Central’s flamboyant president Robert Young
and his contributions—especially the Xplorer.
Govern-ment-funded superhighways and flashy autos won
the struggle after 1956, but ACF’s Talgo train, GM’s
Aerotrain, and Pullman-Standard’s Train X pioneered
many concepts used today. 102 pages, approx. 100 b&w
